Berkhamsted is a medium-sized historic market town around the western edge of the English county of Hertfordshire. Positioned in the compact Bulbourne Valley in the Chiltern Hills, it serves predominantly as a commuter town, being 26 miles to the northwest of London. As recorded in population information from 2013, the town has a resident population of roughly 18,000, occupying approximately 7363 homes. There are a number of properties in residential areas, with 77% of household spaces being houses or bungalows and 23% being flats or maisonettes. Settlements have been in Berkhamsted for over five hundred years, as suggested by archaeological evidence of flint working in the Neolithic period and metal working in the late Iron Age and Roman periods. Whilst farming, service and light industry were characteristic occupations in the area in 1986, the biggest employers of the town in 2015 were schools and retail. Most of the firms are located in the nationally famous Berkhamsted West ward. In 2014, the Academy of Urbanism’s Urbanism Awards described the appeal of Berkhamsted’s High Street as ‘vibrant’ and ‘bustling’, creating a ‘pleasant’ and ‘successful’ shopping environment. There’s a wide collection of shops and food outlets available to residents and visitors, being home of a mixture of independent and commercial chain outlets, cafes, coffee shops, places to eat and pubs. For social opportunities, the Rex Cinema provides a variety of recent films for the citizens of Berkhamsted to view. Being built in the art deco style of architecture in 1937, the Daily Telegraph has ranked the Rex as the United Kingdom’s most beautiful cinema, and it was granted the name of Britain’s Best Cinema in the inaugural Guardian film awards in 2014.
