Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It lies south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Reported as ‘Elant’ in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town originates from the Old English term meaning ‘land by the water, river or land in part or completely encompassed by water’. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and well established history as a production and trading town. The town was given a charter to hold a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be held at the Manor of Elland and at 2 fairs during the year. The town eventually became a prime spot for wool production, and its downturn in the 20th century had a far-reaching impact on the population, with lots of mills being converted to homes, if they were not knocked down. Quarried near the town after the establishment of the canal, tough flagstones were carried cheaply across the country. Elland was the the home of the main factory of the manufacturer of Gannex goods and it is currently the the home of the Dobsons sweet factory, which makes a variety of traditional kinds of boiled sweets.
