Catterick Garrison is a significant garrison and town located 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies inside the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided among the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided amongst two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a little stream generally known as Leadmill Gill, is within the civil parish of Scotton. It is the largest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of around 13000 and measuring over 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to become a short-term camp to accommodate two complete divisions with around 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is anticipated to grow to over 25000 by 2020, making it the biggest population centre within the local area.
