Abertillery is the biggest town in the Ebbw Fach Valley in Gwent, Wales. It is enclosed by the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Blaenavon World Heritage Site. The town used to be a major coal mining centre in the past, but the landscape is now restored to its former beauty.
Abertillery had a population of 11,528 at the 2001 census, and 9.9% of the town know how to speak. At the 2011 census, this figure dropped to 7.2%.
The town centre contains Victorian architecture as it was developed in the 19th century. It used to have two department stores and a covered shopping arcade. The Blaenau Gwent Borough Council are refurbishing these places through a remodelling and modernisation project. Currently the finished projects include many streets and Abertillery’s Metropole Theatre. As well as staging plays and shows it is the location of Abertillery Museum.
The steep nature of the hills surrounding the town centre can make it difficult for the town to increase its developments. But it has meant that Abertillery Park, the local rugby ground, looks like an ampitheatre. It’s often described as one of the most attractive rugby grounds in world rugby.
