Birchington-on-Sea is a village in north east Kent, England. It is a part of the Thanet district and forms part of the civil parish of Birchington. It is positioned on the coast facing the North Sea, east of the Thames Estuary, between the seaside resorts of Herne Bay and Margate. The museum includes a sizeable collection of stuffed exotic animals collected by Major Percy Powell-Cotton on his travels in Africa, and also boasts artifacts discovered in and around Birchington by his daughter, Antoinette Powell-Cotton, a keen archaeologist. As recorded in the 2011 census, the village had 10,000 permanent residents and around 5,000 households.
