Horley is a town in Surrey that surrounds Surrey and West Sussex. It is south of the twin towns of Reigate and Redhill, and neighbouring Gatwick Airport and Crawley. The town is at an altitude of around 54 metres above sea level and covers 4.34 square miles. It has a population of 21232. The Horley Master Plan, passed by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in February 2005, permits for the development of roughly 2600 new homes. This will cover the Metropolitan Green Belt, which is allowed if the regional plan measures up to nationwide criteria, including the capability to display environmental sustainability and maintaining the character of localities. Because of frequent and swift train links to London from Horley Railway Station, Horley certifies as a commuter town. Two thirds of the working population commute to London or Crawley, with the remaining one 3rd working locally. Horley has a considerable economy of its own, consisting of the presence of business parks and a long high street including business chain stores and independent services. It was the home of the Matbro works, which produced forklift trucks between the 1950s and the 1980s and founded telescopic handlers, which were preferred with farmers and development companies. A popular tourist attraction is the Archway Theatre, found under the arches of the Victoria Road railway bridge; the theatre consists of a bar, an auditorium with a seat capability of 95, and a studio theatre seating 40 people.
