Godalming is a traditional market town, civil parish and administrative centre of the Borough of Waverley in Surrey. It is situated 4 miles south-southwest of Guildford, crossing the banks of the River Wey in a closely wooded and rugged area of the outer London commuter belt, and the Greensand Ridge. The town is 30.5 miles southwest of London, and is a part of a three-way twinning arrangement with the French town of Joigny and Mayen in Germany, along with having an association link with the state of Georgia. James Oglethorpe of Godalming founded the colony of Georgia. The Weald, a remnant forest being composed of modest leafy settlements, connects the town to the southwest and the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be located 2.9 miles north of the town centre. Godalming Town Council has disclosed that Godalming features 138 listed buildings, of which 82 are set directly within the town centre, and 18 of which are monuments. The striking Tudor timber framed buildings, 17th-century brickwork buildings and several other buildings can be located on the locally listed structures register. ‘The Pepperpot’, which is Godalming’s first town hall, is one of its most well-known landmarks. Godalming continues to be a typical English market town, holding a market every Friday throughout the year and being the home of a wide array of independent and nationwide sellers. As a result of its visual charm and practical transport connections, the town has been chosen as Britain’s 3rd finest property hotspot, ranked as the Fourth finest region of the UK in which to live, and judged to have the greatest quality of life in 2013.
