The Royal Borough of Greenwich is a London borough in south-east London, England. Taking its name from the historic town of Greenwich, the London Borough of Greenwich was formed in 1965 by the amalgamation of the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich with a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich to the east. It covers a total area of 18.28 square miles.
According to population estimates from the middle of 2014, the borough features a permanent population of about 268678 inhabiants. The Prime Meridian running through Greenwich as well as the Greenwich Observatory is where the designation Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT started, and on which all world times are primarily based.
In 2012, Greenwich was listed as a top 10 global location by Frommer’s, rendering it the only UK location to become listed. It is also the home borough of professional football club Charlton Athletic. To mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, Greenwich became a Royal Borough on 3rd February 2012. This is partly a consequence of its historic links with the Royal Family, and to its UNESCO World Heritage Site status as residence of the Prime Meridian.
