Bargoed is a town within the Rhymney Valley, one of the South Wales Valleys. Historically a market town, Bargoed developed into a successful town soon after the establishment of a colliery in 1903. By 1921, Bargoed had a permanent population of approximately 17,901; this has been gradually declining ever since then, as the overall demand for Welsh coal fell. The colliery, which was the subject of a painting by L. S. Lowry, closed down during the 1980s, and its former site has been turned into a country park. The town has recently been undergoing a significant redevelopment program, which included a bypass running through the valley with links to the town centre.
