Hengoed is a town on the west side of the Rhymney Valley – in between Ystrad Mynach to the south and also Cefn Hengoed to the north. Across the valley it looks towards Maesycwmmer. The town is in the area district of Caerphilly, in the traditional region of Glamorgan, Wales. The name actually suggests ‘old timber’ in the Welsh language. The selecting ward of Hengoed consists of the towns of Hengoed as well as Cefn Hengoed and also a part of Tir-y-Berth in the north west. The ward population was recorded at 5,548 in the 2011 census, a rise of 10% over the previous ten years (2001 = 5,046), due partially to numerous new-build housing developments in the ward between 2001 and 2011.
