The London Borough of Enfield is a London borough in north London with some districts within the borough straddling north-east London, England. It borders the London Boroughs of Barnet (towards the west), Haringey (towards the south) and Waltham Forest (towards the south-east), the districts of Hertsmere (to the north-west), Welwyn Hatfield and Broxbourne (both towards the north) in Hertfordshire, and Epping Forest (to the east) in Essex. The local authority is Enfield Council. It covers a total area of 31.74 square miles.
According to population estimates from the middle of 2014, the borough features a permanent population of around 324574 people. The current borough was created in 1965 from the former areas of the Municipal Borough of Southgate, the Municipal Borough of Enfield along with the Municipal Borough of Edmonton. The Borough’s Civic Centre is positioned in Silver Street, Enfield Town and is home to the Council. Enfield Town is also home to the nearby credit union, North London Credit Union.
In 2007, Enfield Town centre completed a significant redevelopment project. An extension was added onto the current retail area with lots of new shops. As well as this, a significant redevelopment of Edmonton Green, including the shopping centre, an adjacent municipal housing over a wide area, started in 1999 in order to deliver new housing, health facilities, a brand new leisure centre, a supermarket, and numerous other civic features.
