Ellesmere is a market town near Oswestry in north Shropshire, England, noteworthy for its distance to a number of famous Meres. The community is found alongside Ellesmere (aka ‘the Mere’), one of the biggest all-natural meres in England outside the Lake District as well as among 9 antarctic meres in the area. (‘glacial’ means that the depression occupied by the mere was the area of a block of ice that continued at the end of the last Ice Age). These meres are various from those in the Lake District in that they do not have a flow of water into them to keep the degree. A fabricated island in the Mere was constructed in 1812 from dirt removed throughout the production of the yards at Ellesmere House. This was later called Moscow Island, as Napoleon was compelled to retreat from Moscow that year. The Mere has a site visitors’ centre and is popular with birdwatchers, a lot of whom visit to see grey herons nesting. There are eight other meres nearby: Blakemere, Colemere, Crosemere, Kettlemere, Newtonmere, Whitemere, Sweatmere as well as Hanmer Mere. The civil church which comprises the community is Ellesmere Urban; the surrounding church, covering a large backwoods, is Ellesmere Rural.
