Langport is a town as well as civil parish in Somerset, England, 5 miles (8.0 km) west of Somerton in the South Somerset area. The parish (which covers only part of the community) has a population of 1,081. Langport is contiguous with Huish Episcopi, a different parish that includes much of the community’s borders. Langport pushes the east bank of the River Parrett, listed below the factor where that river is joined by the River Yeo (Ivel). There is a causeway across the moor and an essential bridge over the river. Below Langport the Parrett is tidal. The rivers flow from the southern hills through Thorney Moor and also Kings Moor, with a space in between the upland areas around Somerton and Curry Rivel, onto the Somerset Levels where it flows past Bridgwater to the Bristol Channel. Throughout the winter the low-lying areas around Langport are sometimes flooded. The town drops within the Non-metropolitan area of South Somerset, which was based on 1 April 1974 under the City Government Act 1972, having previously become part of Langport Rural Area. The area council is responsible for neighborhood preparation and also building control, regional roads, council housing, environmental wellness, markets and fairs, decline collection and recycling, burial grounds and also crematoria, recreation services, parks, and tourism.
