Carluke is a town situated in the centre of the Lanarkshire countryside in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is 4.7 miles northwest of Lanark and 4.2 miles southeast of Wishaw, sitting on a high plateau overseeing the River Clyde, directly in the centre of Lanarkshire’s fruit growing area. According to a population survey in 2008, it has a permanent population of about 19500, which makes it the Clyde Valley’s most populated town. Carluke’s expansion began most rapidly throughout the time of the industrial revolution, with corn milling, cotton weaving, coal mining plus the manufacture of bricks, glass, confectionary and jam becoming the town’s most substantial industries. Currently, Carluke is predominantly a commuting town. The town is served by dual carriageways connecting it to the M8 and M74, and additionally, it benefits from regular trains to Lanark, Motherwell, Hamilton, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Despite this, you’ll find many significant employers based within the town. As a result of Carluke’s proximity to Clyde Valley’s key fruit growers, the jam company, Renshaw Scott, is a significant employer, which developed further by recently adding a chocolate refinery to their plant. Major redevelopment works have been completed in the town since the beginning of the 21st century. There is certainly a sizeable variety of independent shops and supermarkets in the vibrant and newly regenerated town centre, with residents of neighbouring villages, for instance Braidwood, Forth, Kilncadzow and Law, making use of the wide selection of shops and services that can be found in Carluke. In 2010, a ‘1.1 million indoor soft play and cafe’, ‘The Bubbles Factory’, was constructed, which was voted ‘The best Play in the UK’.
