Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is situated on the River Leven, four miles (6 kilometres) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It is the biggest town in the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed due to the textile business. In 1715, the very first bleachfields in the area were created at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the United States of America grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Soon, textile work in the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it also. The town’s traditional industries, most of all cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, have been phased out. The town was redeveloped during the 1970s with a brand new town centre layout and traffic system. Close by landmarks include Christie Park and also the fountain in the town centre. Alexandria sits on the former A82 main road between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. You’ll find regular bus services on the route and the town features a railway station on the rail line in between Balloch and Glasgow Queen Street. The town is famous as the only UK town with a railway station as well as a pub in the center of a roundabout. The writer A. J. Cronin’s uncle owned a pub in Bridge Street. Alexandria Library is positioned on Gilmour Street. The town is home to the Vale of Leven football club, who play at Millburn Park. The club were a dominant force in early Scottish football history, winning the Scottish Cup in 1877, 1878 and 1879, and were founding members of the Scottish Football League. For all your home renovations, ensure that you use trustworthy specialists in Alexandria to ensure you get the very best quality service.
