Kinlochleven is a town situated in Lochaber, in the Scottish Highlands as well as lies at the eastern end of Loch Leven. To the north lie the Mamores ridge; to the south lie the mountains flanking Glen Coe. The town was formed from two previously different small areas – Kinlochmore to the north of the River Leven in Inverness-shire as well as Kinlochbeg to the south of the Leven in Argyll – following the building of an aluminium smelter and also associated housing for its staff members. The processing plant was powered by a hydroelectric scheme situated in the mountains above, and also made Kinlochleven the initial town in the world to have every residence attached to electricity, creating the phrase “The Electric Village”. In 1991, the town (according to annual census returns) had just over 1000 occupants in some 420 families. Today it is a significant traveler location as well as centre for mountain pursuits.
