Bingley is a market town within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford located in West Yorkshire, England. The town is on the River Aire and also the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is located in Airedale on the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a drop, having a population of approximately 20,000 in 2001 and lowering to approximately 18,000 as per the 2011 Census. The definition of the town’s name is interpreted as ‘Bing’s Clearing’ and has Saxon origins. A lot of the older history of the town continues to be present in the town, for example the Bingley Grammar School, founded in the 16th century, which is thought to be one of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley features an abundance of local shops, a street market, banks and the ‘Little Theatre’. There are also efficient transport links available, with a railway station situated in the town centre and the Leeds Bradford Airport close by. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal pass the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with guests frequently watching barges navigating the locks.
