Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is positioned on the River Leven, four miles (six km) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It’s the largest town in the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed on account of the textile industry. In 1715, the very first bleachfields in the area were created at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the USA grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Soon, textile work within the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it also. The town’s conventional industries, most importantly cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, have been phased out. Alexandria is located on the former A82 main road between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. You’ll find regular bus services on the route and the town includes a railway station on the rail line between Balloch and Glasgow Queen Street. Alexandria Library is positioned on Gilmour Street. The town hosts the Vale of Leven football club, who play at Millburn Park. The club were a dominant force in early Scottish football history, winning the Scottish Cup in 1877, 1878 and 1879, and were founder members of the Scottish Football League.
