Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is located on the River Leven, 4 miles (six km) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It’s the largest town in the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed because of the textile industry. In 1715, the very first bleachfields in the area were created at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the US grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Soon, textile work in the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it too. The town’s conventional industries, above all cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, have been phased out. The town was redeveloped in the 1970s with a brand new town centre layout and traffic system. Local landmarks include Christie Park along with the fountain in the town centre. Alexandria is located on the former A82 main road between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. You can find frequent bus services on the route and the town includes a railway station on the rail line between Balloch and Glasgow Queen Street. The town is considered to be the only UK town with a railway station and also a pub in the center of a roundabout. The writer A. J. Cronin’s uncle owned a pub in Bridge Street. Alexandria Library is located on Gilmour Street. The town is home to the Vale of Leven football club, who play at Millburn Park. The club were a dominant force in early Scottish football history, winning the Scottish Cup in 1877, 1878 and 1879, and were founding members of the Scottish Football League.
