Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It is situated south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Recorded as ‘Elant’ in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town stems from the Old English term meaning ‘land by the water, river or land partially or completely encompassed by water’. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and established history as a production and trading town. The town received a charter to host a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be convened at the Manor of Elland and at two fairs through the year. The town eventually came to be a prime spot for wool production, and its decrease in the 20th century had a far-reaching effect on the population, with lots of mills being converted to homes, if they were not destroyed. Quarried near to the town after the establishment of the canal, tough flagstones were transported cheaply across the country. Elland was the the home of the principal factory of the manufacturer of Gannex goods and it is currently the the home of the Dobsons sweet factory, which manufactures a series of traditional kinds of boiled sweets.
