Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and town positioned three miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies inside the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided amongst the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided between two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a little stream called Leadmill Gill, is in the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Each parish has its personal parish council. It’s the largest British Army garrison in the world, having a population of about 13000 and measuring over 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to be a temporary camp to accommodate two comprehensive divisions with around 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is anticipated to develop to more than 25000 by 2020, making it the largest population centre inside the local area. Lacking a real town centre, the Garrison gained its first large supermarket in 2000, along with a retail park generally known as ‘Richmondshire Walk’, which also includes a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher plus a Peacocks, amongst others. ‘Catterick Leisure Centre’ is a purpose built complex opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it presents a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities like a swimming pool, along with a gym, along with an adjoining public library.
