Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is positioned on the River Leven, 4 miles (six kilometres) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It is the biggest town in the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed because of the textile sector. In 1715, the first bleachfields in the area were established at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the USA grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Soon, textile work in the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it too. The town’s conventional industries, most importantly cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, have been phased out. The town was redeveloped during the 1970s with a brand new town centre layout and traffic system. Local landmarks include Christie Park along with the fountain in the town centre. Alexandria is located on the former A82 main road between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. There are frequent bus services on the route and the town includes a railway station on the rail line between Balloch and Glasgow Queen Street. The town is famous as the only UK town with a railway station and also a pub in the middle of a roundabout. The writer A. J. Cronin’s uncle owned a pub in Bridge Street. Alexandria Library is situated on Gilmour Street. The town is home to the Vale of Leven football club, who play at Millburn Park. The club were a dominant force in early Scottish football history, winning the Scottish Cup in 1877, 1878 and 1879, and were founding members of the Scottish Football League. For all your home improvements, ensure that that you utilise trustworthy professionals in Alexandria to ensure you get the top quality service.
