Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is situated on the River Leven, 4 miles (six kilometres) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It’s the biggest town inside the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed because of the textile sector. In 1715, the very first bleachfields in the area were started at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the United States of America grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Soon, textile work within the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it also. The town’s traditional industries, most importantly cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, have been phased out. The town was redeveloped during the 1970s with a brand new town centre layout and traffic system. Local landmarks include Christie Park as well as the fountain in the town centre. Alexandria sits on the former A82 main road between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. There are frequent bus services on the route and the town features a railway station on the rail line between Balloch and Glasgow Queen Street. The town is well-known as the only UK town with a railway station plus a pub in the center of a roundabout. The writer A. J. Cronin’s uncle owned a pub in Bridge Street. Alexandria Library is positioned on Gilmour Street. The town hosts the Vale of Leven football club, who play at Millburn Park. The club were a dominant force in early Scottish football history, winning the Scottish Cup in 1877, 1878 and 1879, and were founder members of the Scottish Football League. For all of your property improvements, be certain that you employ trustworthy experts in Alexandria to ensure you get the best quality service.
