Bargoed is a town within the Rhymney Valley, one of the South Wales Valleys. It is positioned on the Rhymney River within the county borough of Caerphilly, and it occupies the ancient boundary of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, with Bargoed traditionally lying inside the old county of Glamorganshire whereas Aberbargoed was within the old county of Monmouthshire. It is unsurprising, because of this, that the English meaning of the town’s name is ‘border’. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11900. Initially a market town, Bargoed grew into a prominent town following the establishment of a colliery in 1903. By 1921, Bargoed had a population of about 17,901; it’s been steadily declining since that time, as the overall demand for Welsh coal diminished. The colliery, which was the subject of a painting by L. S. Lowry, shut in the 1980s, and its former site has been transformed a country park. The town has lately been undergoing a major redevelopment program, which included a bypass running through the valley with links to the town centre.
