Historically the site of a Roman fort, Gobannium, it developed into a mediaeval walled town inside the Welsh Marches. Based on the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent resident population of 10078. The town boasts the remains of a mediaeval stone castle built just after the Noman conquest of Wales.
